Life for Earthquake

"Somewhere there must have quaked in New Zealand recently," explains Prof. Dr. Klaus Hinzen by the earthquake-station Bensberg and shows us the eruptions on the seismometer: "Part of the oscillations is also here, but remember we are humans even not. "
Since 1951 are all recorded in Bensberg Erdschwingungen evaluated. "In Cologne, the soil is too restless and too sandy. Here in Bensberg, it is a bit calmer and we are directly on the rock, "said Professor Hinzen.
Data from about 40 sites from across the Rhineland converge in Bensberg and are evaluated by several seismologists. "There are lots of small earthquakes every week in the Rhineland, but stronger quakes, which occur, we also feel it on every few thousand years."
The last major quake there was on 22 July 2002 at 7.45 clock. "Earthquakes are with us a rare phenomenon. Nevertheless, there were in the last 20 years here quakes have caused the damage. 1992 is even the cathedral was damaged, "said Hinzen.
Together with his team investigated the professor, the earthquake and then deliver its information to civil engineers. "When earthquakes around the world, there is often disasters, because it was built wrong. That we want to avoid, "says seismologist.
